All children can learn when supported and encouraged. My students have social and emotional disabilities that impact their learning in other academic areas. My students are learning to self regulate their emotions using various techniques which include going to a quiet place and selecting a preferred calming method such as taking deep breaths, holding a stuffed animal, or singing quietly to themselves. The couch and the CD player with the soothing music will provide a safe place for my students to independently discover a calming strategy that works for them. This transferable skill will improve the likelihood of success in the classroom.
