I am working to build my social work office and secure tools for my most vulnerable students. While I have basic toys; I am serving an urban school of approximately 508 students, with over 20% identified as special needs students. We need supplies that students can use to not only express their feelings, but to strengthen skills such as social, emotional, sensory, and auditory. My goal is to ensure that my Social Work office has the supplies necessary to empower my students and help them succeed in every aspect possible. Many of my students express their feelings through behaviors. Some of them are unable to find the words to express themselves, while some do not even understand or recognize what they are feeling. The tools I have chosen for my project will help my sensory seeking students to remain calm and focused, while teaching them about feelings, and helping them to recognize them in a variety of ways. More specifically, my students come from a place where they do not feel centered, grounded, or secure, and they seek those feelings when they come to school. The emotion balls, regulation putty, and mood squares will be incorporated in therapeutic play to engage and teach students to recognize and describe their feelings, a basic expectation that often many students lack. The boundary chair, time tracker, and weighted bean bags will assist those students that are sensory seeking to feel secure and self-regulated while learning and sharing in a safe space. I hope that I can receive some assistance in obtaining these necessary items. These children are future leaders, and they need me to help them learn what so many are lacking, how to express, share, and communicate effectively. Thank you to all who took the time to read about my project.
