The needs of children who have experienced trauma are unique and highly individual. Trauma affects all aspects of a child’s life including their emotional well-being, behavior, self-regulation skills and ability to learn. Rather than send these children to a separate, more restrictive school, our district now has a specific program called Steps to Success, serving children in grades K-8. Here, the student to teacher ratio is almost 1 to 1, allowing students to receive truly individualized attention. The program is housed in a wing of the middle school that was previously unoccupied. This is the program’s pilot year, and while we have a sensory room, we do not have the materials necessary to make the most impact on these students. After spending a lot of our own money to make the space feel cozy and safe, there is still a lot that needs to be done. We all hope that at least some of our wishes will be granted and our pilot year will be a success. For students with trauma, they need a safe place to go and an environment that meets their emotional and sensory needs.
