These students, some nonverbal and some minimally verbal, are developing basic communication skills, like asking for help, asking for snack, saying "no", and responding to others. Using the printer and laminator we can make the messages they need, then teach them how to use them. Symbols are easily understood pictures, which these students can use with teachers, with peers, and throughout the school to share their needs and ideas when their words don't work. But making picture symbols, communication books, and communication boards takes a lot of printing and laminating. Its a lot of work, but when these students can communicate, its all worth it.
