We are going to explore evolution by making a species of our own that can change over time. We are going to build the species, learn to program the species, test the species in survival arenas, observe the species changing over generations, hope that the species stands the test of time. This project is a tangible way for students to understand evolutionary processes and learn useful, real-world coding skills. They will be collaborating with one-another in hands-on, active ways that have them on their feet and toes thinking and brainstorming. Each robot will be cared for by a small group of 3-4 students who will code mutations they hope will advance their species. Students will experience programming as an authentic, trial-and-error, problem-solving experience. Further, my kids will be able to explain the roles of diversity, mutation, and natural selection in the process of evolution through their work with these robots. Due to the price of these robots and the limited amount of technology we have at our school, this project would simply not be possible without your donations. Your donations will make this interdisciplinary history and science unit one my students never forget because they will have access to resources that give them a much greater sense of agency in their learning. Thank you for your consideration.
