Last year, I began to experiment with flexible seating because a teacher across the hall had provided her students with flexible seating. I noticed that the classroom behavior in her class had improved and students were more engaged in their work. I was able to purchase a few throw pillows to begin introducing flexible seating into my classroom. I removed 6 chairs from a table and lowered it to accommodate the students sitting on the pillows. The students enjoyed having a choice on how they could sit and finish their work. This year, I would like to implement more seating choices by providing floor chair seats, pillows and stools. These choices will give students the flexibility to sit on what they want to in order to finish their work. Flexible seating provides students the opportunity to sit on something other than a chair. A hard chair that is not always comfortable. We all enjoy reading a book on a couch then move to the recliner then move to the bed. Being expected to sit on the same product everyday is unrealistic. Learning changes and so does our comfort. I would like to give students the opportunity to feel comfortable in the classroom by providing a variety of seating options. Also, students who need a little bit of wiggle time will benefit from the stools. Students can have the ability to rock while working so that they don't feel confined to sit on a chair that doesn't provide motion. Therefore, not all chairs fit all students. A classroom with flexible seating can benefit students and teacher.
