Each year students in Connecticut are given the opportunity to vote for the Nutmeg Award winner, which recognizes quality literature across different grade bands. Books at both the intermediate (grades 4-6), and teen (7-8) levels are at the interest and reading level of our sixth grade students. Each of the ten nominees, at each grade band, was selected based on its strong characterization, vivid setting, and well constructed plot. Most importantly, year after year, these are the books that students gravitate towards and show excitement and enthusiasm to read! These books will be able to be used throughout the year within our classrooms during reading workshop. Students will be able to read these books in the classroom and at home. As these books reflect both diverse and engaging plot lines, they will be particularly useful during our Critical Literacy and Social Issues Book Clubs units, which we will engage in later on this year. Most importantly, as we want to continue to motivate and encourage our students to engage in reading, these 76 new books will be incredible additions to our classroom libraries.
