Seeking Supplies for Asylum Seekers
Funded Apr 6, 2023Thank you so much for your generosity. Due to your gifts, we were able to provide all of our asylum seeking students with a box full of supplies that they could take home and use for school work and also creative projects.
As you know, drawing and writing are amazing escapes from the stresses of life and these students have seen more than their share of stressful situations. Your generosity provided tools to help our students process their feelings and to have a richer learning experience in and out of the classroom.”

Ms. Smith

Funded Sep 29, 2022Your generous donation has made my classroom cozier and more exciting. The library is now our "water cooler." Students gather to discuss and recommend books to others. They want to complete tasks to have more time to read. They have rich discussions with each other about the merits of one series over another.
I believe that you have helped to instill a lifelong love of reading. The kids aren't just enjoying the books themselves. They are realizing that books build community; they really enjoy talking about the books with their peers.
Reading a variety of books helps to build schema and understanding. Having books the kids enjoy has really helped and continues to help my students to make inferences and draw conclusions about what they read across subjects.”

Funded Nov 21, 2011Our unit on The Hunger Games is drawing to a close. I want to thank you for your generous donations. I have never seen an entire class so deeply engaged in a book. We had such a great time reading and discussing the book. As our writing component, the class wrote literary essays about one of the novel's major themes. The end results are excellent! I hope you can take a moment to look at the photos taken during our publishing celebration.
It is a challenge to find engaging materials on a tight budget. By donating to this project you have opened my class to an awesome piece of young adult literature that they learned a lot from and will not soon forget. Not only did the students enjoy the book; many of their family members read it along with us at home. This was great for organic book talks and a shared reading experience. We became a community of Hunger Games fanatics! It gave us such a fantastic platform for much (and sometimes heated) discussion.
Once again, I thank you for your donation and participation in my project. My students thank you more. They are putting on the full court press to read Catching Fire, the second book in the trilogy, as our next whole class novel! ”

Ms. Smith
Empower My Students With Books
Funded Oct 9, 2010Hello and thank you again for your generous donation. My class of 6th graders is embarking on reading this important piece of literature. We are all very excited; the excitement is palpable among my students about getting their own copy of the book to read! To offer a little bit of history, our structure in this class is to read a text as a class, discuss it along the way, and then have a writing piece that gets published for family, peers, and the school administration to read and celebrate.
I really cannot tell you how much the class is looking forward to the book and the writing piece. We will be journalling as we go through The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The published writing piece will be a bound collection of the journal entries. We will be connecting the book's events to history and discussing the issues that arise. We have begun tapping into students' prior knowledge in preparation.
As you can see from the pictures that I have uploaded, my students take great pride in their work. These photos were from our last publishing party and it really was a resounding success. Teachers, family members, and our school's principal were in attendance while the class celebrated their hard work. My co-teacher and I are equally as excited for the work we will do surrounding The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This is a very important text; having a copy of the book to take care of as we go through it together will add even more meaning to the content. ”
