Many of my students are beginning readers and they have a difficult time finding books to read independently. Wordless picture books are a great option for students learning to read. The books may not have words but they still teach children about characters, setting, plot, sequencing, cause and effect, comprehension, etc. They are also useful for the teacher during think-alouds. Each student has a chance to use their inferencing skills to describe what is happening in the story. Students who read these wordless picture books may begin to pick up books for enjoyment. Wordless picture books are a gateway to better reading skills for reluctant readers.
