My school has no lab resources related to botany. These supplies will allow me to teach my students about important botanical structures--leaves, seeds, and wood--at both eye level and microscopic level. With the leaf press, we can collect, preserve, and identify specimens from our school and homes. With the wood cuts, we can compare the qualities, structure, and values of different species and kinds of wood. With the microscope slides, we can examine the cellular foundation of plant structures and the differences among different species. My students can identify hundreds of corporate logos but cannot identify the most common trees in their own backyards--I know this because I tested them on it! Consequently, young people don't appreciate our forests as a valuable resource offering material goods, biodiversity, and beauty. With these materials, my students will be given an opportunity to study botany in an engaging and meaningful way that considers both the human scale as well as the microscopic underpinnings.
