I am requesting the help of my community and this organization to purchase a charging cell phone locker to eliminate the distractions posed by cell phones. While there is no doubt that smartphones have remarkable capabilities, studies conducted by the University of Texas, indicate that cell phones hurt vulnerable students, and that allowing cell phones into schools are the most damaging to low achieving students and low-income students.
Studies also indicate that students of color spent almost twice as much time on their cell phones as their white peers exacerbating existing learning inequalities. In the same study, students of color had challenges with concentration and academic stamina.
Given the 99.9% minority population of my school, restrictions to cell phone access would assist in the academic achievement of my student population by eliminating the distractions inherent in the use of cell phones by this digital generation.
