First of all, it is important to define an IEP for the layperson. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which is required under the Americans with Disabilities in Education Act (ADEA), creates an opportunity for students, teachers, parents, school administrators, and related services personnel to work together to improve educational results for children with disabilities. The IEP is the cornerstone of a quality education for each child with a disability. The room where we hold our IEP meetings (at least 150 per academic year) is a small windowless, drab room consisting of two old wobbly tables and an odd mix of chairs without wheels. We would like to give the IEP room a makeover by purchasing a small conference table, at least six comfortable chairs with wheels, a lamp, and a table to hold relevant materials and procedural information for students and parents and/or guardians. Staff members have volunteered to donate motivating pictures for the walls and other items to make the room more comfortable for the many students, staff, and professionals who frequently use it.
