A set of four iPads would be an extremely useful addition to my Computer Science and Robotics classroom because of the versatility of the device. Currently, students have access to Chromebooks, but these laptop computers do not have access to a majority of the design apps that tablets do, additionally, they aren’t very mobile. The iPad’s touchscreen capabilities and portability allow students to participate in more complex and engaging projects, pushing their critical thinking skills. Furthermore, the iPads allow students to input real-time data as they move to different settings to test their prototypes. Providing students with this type of access to data allows them the opportunity for instant feedback in the form of tracking data and adjusting their work in real time. In Robotics, for instance, students use the “LEGO Mindstorms” application to program various commands for their robot. One of the issues we came across this past year with the Chromebooks was students not being able to make real-time adjustments to their programming. With iPads, students would be able to respond to data in the moment, which would allow them to complete more challenges and experiments. With the opportunity to reiterate in a timelier manner, students will get the feel for the real iteration process engineers go through when designing an experiment or product. Getting to practice and apply the Design-Thinking iteration process will allow students to become competent and competitive innovators to and through college!
