A typical day In my class looks like this: I hand out a copy of a short story to everyone. We read it together as I model my thinking about the text. I show kids how to do annotations, we discuss the story, then I send them off to practice the skills on their own individual books. Talking, writing, and thinking about interesting books is a surefire way to help kids raise their reading levels. I hold small-group conferences to make sure they're actually reading. We discuss their nightly annotation homework. I even have a group of girls right now who are reading the same book via a group chat at night! Far too often, I hear, "I've never read a whole book" or "I hate reading." I promise my students that I can change their minds and will put the right book in their hands. Most of the time, I can deliver on that promise. I just need more copies of quality fiction for all the little hands that need a "juicy" (my term) book.
