  • Books for Boys

    Funded Nov 16, 2016

Wow! I woke up this morning and saw that my project had been funded--I cannot wait to tell my students! Ever since I shared the titles with them, they have been asking, "When do our new books arrive?" They will be thrilled.

I am so grateful for your generosity. While I cannot wait to share this news with them, watching them eagerly dive into the boxes of new books the day they arrive will be the real treat.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ottaviani

  • Books Build Literacy

    Funded Oct 15, 2013

Last week, I placed the books on a table in the middle of the room. As the students entered, I heard Navraj say, "Wow! Books!" Another student commented, "Are we just going to read today?" He looked eager to get started. As all the students gathered about the piles of stories, they began to sort and talk. Those who had read a few of the titles began "selling" those books to the others. (Just like I had hoped.) Everyone was flipping books over to read the backs. There were moments of silence as they tested the first few pages.

I had prepared a lesson to get us started with our book project, a project the students are helping to create; however, their natural curiosity and eagerness to read steered the class in a new direction. I abandoned my lesson plan and let them lead last Friday. By the end of class, they had decided that we should post our work with the books on Edmodo. This online forum will allow students to talk about their books daily. In addition, they enjoyed the prospect of choosing topics from the books to create a website, a brochure, or even an art exhibit at a local restaurant. These final projects will be created by the students and are already being constructed.

Over the past four days, I've already received ten emails about returning finished books and checking out new ones! Thank you again for donating materials that brightened my students' day and filled a long weekend with new possibilities.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ottaviani

  • Hunger Games & Social Issues

    Funded Sep 21, 2010

Thank you so much! I have posted all of your replies on my board and shared each one with my students. They are amazed and excited. Thank you for inspiring them with your interest and donation.

This is my first time using Donor's Choose and I am inspired by each of you -- your commitment to the education of my students will make HUGE changes in their lives.

We begin our project in Jan., 2011 and I promise to send as many updates and pictures as possible!

Again, a very heart-felt thank you to each of you!! ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ottaviani

My students are 14 going on 15 and love to read. They are interested in fiction, current events, and have a nose for injustice. I need more books to feed their minds and amplify the many voices in our world. We use these texts to discuss and write about our lives. The stories of both fictional and real characters inspire and teach them that they can make real change happen in their world.
