We were fortunate enough to have inherited a classroom that has a ton of books in it! Many of these books are Read-Along, meaning they come with one CD so students can listen and be read to. Having a Listen-to-Reading time is a proven way to increase fluency, reading level, English language skills, and makes higher leveled books more accessible to lower-level readers. Our classroom is made up of over 50% ESL students and approximately 70% of our students are reading below Third Grade levels. Adding a Listen-to-Reading rotation will help these students learn what fluent reading sounds like, expose them to multi-syllable words that many of them find difficult and help them learn the content they need to regardless of their reading level. However, we don’t have the technology resources to use these fabulous books to help us read. We have the books; all we need is your help to get the tools to use them! The wireless headphone and pillow set will help us set up a Listen-to-Reading area in our classroom so groups can listen to and have critical Literature Circle discussions on the same book, even if the book is higher than their independent reading level. Funding this project will help these students use the resources we already have available, reach their reading goals and support critical thinking skills for the subsequent group discussions. I selected the materials I did so that each reading group can read the same book and support each other’s comprehension in collaborative literature circle discussions.
