Movement for Learning

Funded Sep 8, 2018

Thank you so much for taking the time to look into my project and feeling like it was important enough for the kids to donate towards it! I was overwhelmed with gratitude and so thankful for your generosity! Waccamaw Elementary School had a swing base in the therapy room, but only one swing and it was broken, so it was unable to be utilized. I work with a lot of children who have sensory processing delays. They have a difficult time getting and staying organized which affects their ability to sit, attend and participate in their classroom setting. Some students have severe responses to tactile, auditory, and visual stimuli and constantly seek movement, touch and oral input. When they have extreme reactions some can have difficulty calming down. These difficulties can adversely affect their learning and the learning of their classmates. The cuddle swing will give the kids a cozy and safe place to calm down when over stimulated. The platform swing will provide movement for calming while also working on postural control and trunk strengthening. These swings will make a huge impact for these children and provide them with the sensory input they need as well as a safe and calming space.

During Hurricane Florence my room along with 12 other rooms were flooded from a pipe bursting in the ceiling. All of the therapy mats, ball pit, and wooden furniture had to be thrown away because of the water damage. My students loved opening the swings and taking pictures with them (thankfully they were still in the main office when the flood occurred) but we are unable to use them until we get the mats back underneath the swings for safety. We are all anxiously awaiting the arrival of our mats (the school district is replacing them)! The swings will help more than 20 children this school year with sensory processing delays and hundreds more in the years to come. Thank you again for your support!”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Rhea
