Basic scientific calculators (without the graphing functions) are necessary for a introductory chemistry class. In the classroom with over 20 students, teaching students how to solve multi-step problems is challenging under the best circumstances. Throw in 5 different models of calculators, phones doubling as calculators, a hazy understanding of scientific notation and it becomes very messy. Having a consistent, functional set of calculators in the classroom will put the students on a more level playing field and remove a common barrier to problem solving. They can stop worrying about how to enter a number in their calculator and start worrying about how to solve the next problem!
