Many of our students have fled government persecution for a variety of reasons. By allowing a different experience, combined with the Social Studies curriculum, we will be able to hold discussions that are free of specific situations that our students have survived. The Book Thief will allow us to address a standard, and reality, in a less-threatening method to address genocide. Our students have needs which most other students do not. This project is designed to integrate Social Studies (the Holocaust) with Language Arts to create an encompassing unit for both subject areas in a more meaningful way. I have been to the United States Holocaust Museum multiple times. I have seen the Illinois Holocaust Museum. I believe that our students deserve the right to understand history and how it continues today. The Book Thief will give them a window into that world.
