Because I'm a new teacher, my classroom right now is incredibly bare, plain, and institutional-looking. I hope that filling our shared learning space with visuals of great men and women from students' own backgrounds will help with a process of inclusion and connection. The diverse backgrounds and perspectives that students bring to the classroom is a truly rich resource, and I want to show a visual affirmation of that. With your contribution, my students will see iconic photographs of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Barack Obama. They'll see the portraiture of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's depiction of traditional Mexico. I work hard to make my classroom a place where student's individual voices and cultural backgrounds are valued in the discourse, partly because students who feel disconnected from school and don't identify with the curriculum may struggle to realize academic success.
