Teaching history can be difficult at times. Students see the past as they would a far and distant land they have never visited. They oftentimes have trouble making connections with those that have lived before and the characters of history are all too often stoic symbols of a time period that lack human characteristics and emotions. For students to be successful in history, this can't be the norm. They must see those that have lived before, the same way they see themselves. To help achieve this goal, I would like to provide my students with interesting literary materials that pique their interest in the Middle Ages. This will help span the gap between 700 years of history and present day and allow the students the opportunity to feel as though they are actually traveling through time and making a journey through the Middle Ages. Not only will this allow students to learn history, but they will have the opportunity to become better readers and interpreters of history. Many students say they don't like to read, but in reality, they just don't like what they are reading. I believe this book, The Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England, will be something they want to read and can learn material and skills from in return.
