This year I am asking the students to focus on how they use their time. We will be doing a lot of writing, reading, discussing, and thinking around the ideas of value, buy-in, cost, and focus. This relates to hour glass time keepers because it is a way for students to tangibly see the time pass as they are working. I want the hour glass to contain fifteen minutes because 14.4 (rounded up to 15) minutes is 1% of their day. The questions I want them to answer are: what could they do with a sustained and intentional focus for one percent of their day? What is the value of the time they spend? What is happening to the time they have whether they are intentional about spending it or not? There are many more concepts and questions for them to ponder, but I would love for them to have one percent of their day in their hands and to be able to set those timers for them to work in sustained focus for 15 minute increments throughout the class period.
