According to a survey done by the Center for Child and Adolescent Health (2011/12), nearly 35 million children in the United States have experienced at least one event that could lead to childhood trauma. With approximately 70 million children in the US, that means 1 out of 2 students in the US has suffered an adverse childhood experience. As students walk into my classroom, I am preparing for a group of diverse learners with a range of academic and socio-emotional needs. For many of them, our classroom will be a safe haven, providing stability and routine in their daily lives. Funding this project means my students will have an opportunity to gain positive coping strategies, social skills, and leadership training. These life skills set the stage for a peaceful, positive, and restorative environment, allowing all friends to learn and thrive. With the supplies outlined in my project, my goal is to make students feel safe, welcome, and happy. We'll use pillows to read comfortably. We'll mitigate harsh florescent lighting with light covers and string lighting. As we work, we'll use aromatherapy to activate positive emotions and sensory tools to alleviate negative ones. During weekly class meetings, we'll use mindfulness training to help us become better friends and students. Pillows + Peace = Academic Power!
