To understand the environment in its entirety is an almost unfeasible option, no matter what part of the world you reside in. Although you can certainly learn about it through videos and images, it is impossible to bring total understanding into the science classroom without experimentation and representation. What I am asking for is an opportunity to bring the ocean, a vast and fundamentally important part of all ecosystems on Earth, to a classroom of students where most may never have the opportunity to see it in person. In initiating this endeavor, I have made extensive monetary contributions, but what I can give is not enough. By acquiring these items, I will be able to ensure the long term establishment of a salt water tank that has already captivated many of my students. The RO/DI Aquarium Filter is a reverse osmosis distillation system that pulls all ions out of the water, ensuring that sensitive corals are getting the high quality water they need to thrive. The Instant Ocean Reef Salt, Phosguard, and Super Activated Carbon provide an environment free of excess/poor nutrients and high in coral growth promoting ions. The Jebao Wavemaker will help the reef simulate oceanic water movements. Both Salifert tests will be used to maintain perfect Calcium and Alkalinity levels to promote coral growth. Finally, the Refractometer will be used by students to determine the salinity of the tank. All of the science classes in the school will be able to use this saltwater tank in understanding the important parts of ocean reefs that help the entire world. We will be able to run extensive chemical tests, observe important symbiotic relationships, study coral and coral propagation, and get a deeper understanding as to what is hurting the reefs.
