Choosing a novel for a class of 30 students to read is like trying to order a pizza for 30 people. It's nearly impossible to make a choice that will leave everyone satisfied, so why not let students make their own decision instead?
With literature circles, my students will be able to sample several engaging novels and decide for themselves which one will offer the most illuminating reading experience. Students will work in groups with others who expressed a common interest and are invested reading and learning together. Students will practice leadership and organizational skills as well, since discussions and activities are much more student led than when using a whole class novel.
All of the books focus on issues facing today's teens and will provide ample discussion and writing material, and will be an excellent contrast to some of the more 'classic' novels students have read.
