  • Engaging Materials for Students with Autism

    Funded Oct 11, 2022

thank you for your generous donation! my kids have been loving the new toys/materials. They have been motivated to communicate using verbal words, pictures, and/or high-tech devices. Today, one of my students, who has limited joint attention and self-directed, was playing with the ball game and using his device to ask for more, choose colors ,and ask for help. I was even able to get him to take turns with me, which is very rare! The stacking cups and spin toy have also been big hits. We've used them to work on colors and modeling up/down, stop/go, my turn/your turn, and off/on. Thank you again for your support!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Mahoney

  • New Materials for Speech/Language Therapy

    Funded Feb 5, 2022

Thank you for giving my students these new materials. When the packages arrived, they were beyond excited and loved helping me go through them. The hands-on manipulative materials has increased the active participation in many of my students who can be difficult to engage. When they are interested and excited about an activity, their spontaneous language increases. We have also been able to target many social skills, including turn taking, following the rules, and using "expected" behaviors. I can't thank you enough! : )”

  • Printer for Visuals Working with Students with Autism

    Funded Sep 4, 2018

My students are utilizing colored visuals across their day. From their communication books/visuals to their visual schedules, they are able to communicate and learn using a multi-modality approach. Today, for the first time, one of my students independently utilized his communication book to ask for a preferred food item. I was also able to create visuals to carryover the communication at home. My students and families are beyond thankful to you for providing the appropriate technology to make it happen.

    Thank you!!!

    Ms. Courtney”

I am a speech-language pathologist in an urban district. I service pre-k to fourth grade students diagnosed with a variety of disorders, including receptive/expressive language, articulation, and pragmatic. Many of the students on my caseload are diagnosed with autism. They range from low to high functioning; however, many are non-verbal. They relay on pictures and/or high-tech communication devices to communicate (e.g. I-Pads). They also require a multi-modality approach to learning, which include a variety of visuals for them to use across the day (e.g. visual schedules). Unfortunately, my school does not have a colored printer accessible to special education. Colored visuals and pictures are not only important for their learning; but also, there ability to communicate their wants and needs.
