Multicultural literature serves as a powerful tool in enabling students to gain a better understanding of both their own culture and the cultures of others. As students of the 21st century are global participants, it is important that they possess cultural sensitivity. With this book my 9th grade students will answer the following essential questions: How do writers present ideas using patterns and motifs? How do our stories shape who we are? How does society shape who I am? Students will be practicing finding patterns in the text (imagery, motif, thematic concept, etc) and focus on writing evidence-based inferential statements related to specific thematic concepts. This book is a moving narrative of survival that explores the universal immigrant theme of assimilation and its effects on family, culture, and identity. The poetic language offers students an opportunity to use a reader-response approach in which they play with her phrases to create new meaning from the text.
