My young musicians will be facing so many challenges as we return to in-person learning. School will not look or feel the same, which can cause significant emotional distress. During this stressful time, I would like to give my students as much normalcy as possible when they walk through my door, while also keeping them safe! This means that many of the activities we would typically do during music class cannot happen due to the risks they present during COVID-19 (singing, sharing instruments, movement activities, and games that bring students within close proximity to one another).
During this challenging time, I want to make sure that I am providing equitable, authentic, and engaging activities for my musicians, but that is not possible right now with the instruments and classroom materials that we have. With my current set-up, some classes would have the opportunity to use instruments during class while others would not. Many instruments in our classroom cannot be used since they cannot be easily sanitized after each use without damaging the instrument. My goal is to create individual music bags for each student to use when they come to class. The plastic eggs will be used to make egg shakers. The dowel rods will be used as rhythm sticks for Kindergarten through 3rd grade, the drum sticks will be used as rhythm sticks and for bucket drumming in 4th through 5th grade, the pool noodles will be cut to use as a scraping instrument like sand blocks, and the dry erase markers will be paired with sheet protectors for each student to use as whiteboards. By helping fund this project, you are helping to make sure that the music doesn't stop just because of COVID-19!
