Being able to have headphones in the classroom will enhance the content in which I teach in my social studies class. Having the students be able to take virtual field trips or watch short videos on the computer and respond will allow them to get a deeper understanding of the civilizations that I talk about in our classroom. As a social studies teacher of ancient civilizations I feel it is really hard for students to wrap their heads around what civilizations looked like in ancient times as well as what life was a like. Allowing students to have access to the computer and the various learning programs created will spark a higher interest which will increase understanding. In my current situation students are asked to bring their own headphones but many do not have them to bring. I attempted to purchased some insanely cheap headphones but many of them have already broke or quit working.
I tried allowing students to listen to the online resources at a low level but with 25 computers all talking and saying different things it is really hard for the students to focus to complete their activity. Guaranteeing all students have headphones will quiet the room and allow students to focus on their computer and learning. Struggling readers can also benefit from having headphones in class by being able to listen to the online textbook read to them as they search for answers to complete various independent activities.
