I work in a Title I school that serves a low income but resilient community! Our school qualifies for 100% free and reduced lunch (education professionals use this qualification as a measure of socio economics for students and communities. The higher the percentage, the more widespread the poverty for the student population ). Our students are exceptionally diverse, and many are recent immigrants or refugees. My classroom routinely consists of about 8 different primary languages (some students learning English just this year), and many family cultures. A large portion of my students suffer from the effects of trauma, and continued exposure to violence and stress in their communities, which impacts their learning at school. An even larger portion of my students show exceptional resilience, perseverance and a motivation to learn!
