According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, females are statistically underrepresented in Computer Science career fields, despite the fact that the number of jobs available in these fields continues to climb. For my female students, who come from lower economic, rural backgrounds, the probability of entering the Computer Science field is even less likely, especially if they are never given adequate exposure to computer coding.
The materials requested for this project will be used to further enhance the free lessons provided by the Girls Who Code organization. As previously mentioned, my 3rd-5th girls are voracious learners and avid leaders. The books included in this grant will give students the option of continuing their coding learning well beyond the confines of club times. These books, both Fiction and Nonfiction titles, will educate these students about prominent female computer scientists, present them with more coding challenges, and will spark collaboration and conversation between club participants. The requested Makey Makey sets will be introduced and used in tandem with the Scratch coding lessons provided in the Girls Who Code curriculum. As students become more comfortable with their coding knowledge, they will be able to use this simple circuit board to reprogram other everyday objects.
All of the requested materials are reusable for future clubs and coding projects. The main goal of this program is to expose our female students to a potential career pathway that they may not have previously considered, as well as show them that coding is for girls too!
Help us provide the spark that ignites their flame!
