  • Spanish Review T-Shirts

    Funded May 18, 2021

This project far exceeded my expectations in many ways. I created a different set of requirements for each course- Spanish 2, Spanish 1, Spanish Junior, English Language Development 1 for Newcomers, and English Language Development 2 for Long-Term English Learners. Each course's expectations were a review of everything covered during the year from verb conjugations, historical sites, to the pledge of allegiance, as well as goals and dreams for the future.

Students worked on the projects for two weeks and the results were astounding. One student is even planning to hang her T-shirt on her wall at home because she is so proud of her results. Many students wore their shirts for the entire last day of school, which says a lot for high schoolers.

Thank you so much for consistently supporting my classroom through Donor's Choose. As I move into an administrative role overseeing Federal Programs I will no longer be eligible to submit projects, however, I will encourage other teachers to do so because your generosity makes teachers' dreams in the classroom come true as project ideas become a reality.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lonner

  • Meeting Basic Needs So Students Can Focus On Learning

    Funded Feb 7, 2021

I thank you for investing in my DonorsChoose project, "Meeting Basic Needs so Students Can Focus on Learning". I created a cabinet in my classroom that is open access to students so that they can grab a snack anytime they are hungry. Just this morning I had a student in my second-period class that said, "Mrs. Lonner, my stomach won't stop grumbling." I directed him to the snack cabinet and after eating a lemon Lara bar he was able to concentrate and do his work. This is an almost daily scenario in my classroom and the items that you funded in my project have been a blessing.

I keep the lotion, lip balms, tissues, and gum on my desk and they too are used daily. The 400 pieces of individually wrapped gum have already run out and were a hit. With everyone wearing masks, gum has become a very important commodity! The lip balms came in three different flavors and have been great for students.

Please know that your donations, no matter how big or small, make a huge difference in my classroom. Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lonner

  • School Supplies for 1-1 Use

    Funded Sep 4, 2020

It is with heartfelt gratitude that I write to you. As I write this letter I am sitting quietly in my classroom having just finished teaching one of three classes today via Zoom. I can hear the teachers down the hall instructing students online; they are encouraging and patient as they explain the concepts being taught. We have been able to have students in the building for most of the year with COVID protocols in place, but have been doing Comprehensive Distance Learning since early December. We are thrilled to know that next Monday, January 11th, we will have students once again back in the building for face-to-face instruction.

So as to ensure a safe learning environment in my classroom this year when students are present it is imperative that they have access to individual supplies. Your generous donation of school supplies has allowed me to teach as effectively as possible while adhering to COVID guidelines. Highlighters, glue sticks, scissors, notebooks, and other supplies have been a blessing.

When the supplies arrived, I let each student choose their favorite color of highlighter to mark the text. Then, students that did not have notebooks and were not able to get to the store were able to select one. It may seem like no big deal, but these items make all the difference in ensuring that our students have what they need to be successful in school. So, thank you again for making my classroom a priority and meeting the needs of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lonner

  • Read All About It!

    Funded Aug 12, 2020

I can't thank you enough for funding my project, "Read All About It". My English Learner students, the students that are primarily benefiting from the project, have found enjoyment and reading success through the books that you provided to our classroom.

In my first period class, we have been reading the I Survived series aloud. As we read through "I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake, 1906" we looked online at historical footage of the earthquake, comparisons of before and after photos, and visited the United States Geological Survey site and looked at daily earthquakes around the world. Students were engaged and learning as we interacted with the text.

The Dr. Seuss books have been a great addition to the classroom for my Newcomers, students that are in their second year of learning English. I have watched them find success as they learn to pronounce the words and hear the rhythm of the language.

We all learn to read by reading at a level that is comprehensible and engaging and your generous donation of books for my classroom has been a blessing to my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lonner

  • Balance That Equation!

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

What a fun addition Balance Beans has been to our classroom. When the boxes first arrived, students felt so special in that they, THEY, had been given new games. As the boxes were opened, there was laughter, smiles and an eagerness to play.

In our Math Lab class, students play the games and enjoy the challenge of competing with a partner to see who can balance the beans more quickly which is reinforcing balancing equations. In my Spanish and ESL classrooms, students have also been playing with the purpose of supporting language for board games, colors, ordinal numbers and directions. For example, "Take three blue beans and place them in the second column on the left."

Thank you, Donors, for making an impact in our classroom at Lost River Junior/Senior High School. Your investment in our classroom has brought learning to life through play.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lonner

Learning is encouraged by play, active engagement, and immediate feedback. Using the game Balance Beans, students will learn pre-algebra skills for balancing equations through play. Problem-solving skills will be developed as students learn to balance equations through play. Pre-algebra skills are necessary for students to be successful in higher-level math courses and through working with my Jr. High students have discovered that they need more interaction with manipulates and games to understand the math we are doing in class. Currently, we only have one of these games, which is a one-player game. It would be of great benefit for us to have a game for each student.
