Contrary to popular belief, journalism is not dead! Many of my alumni have gone on to journalism positions at their respective universities, writing articles and taking pictures. Surprisingly, more photos than writing. While smartphones can get great angles and produce beautiful photos, there is no substitute for learning about manual focus, lighting, aperture, and depth of field. With a new camera, my students can more effectively capture their high school memories and produce a more dynamic newspaper. Every year we submit our paper to our county fair and with a new camera we hope for increased success in the photojournalism category, further proving that journalism is not dead.
