I recently went to a training on how to help students develop the fundamental motor skills to spark their brain, build their bodies, and improve their behavior to increase academic performance. Did you know that physical activity before class can lead to increases in students’ test scores, overall physical activity and confidence in their academic ability? We were given four different types of task cards to develop all my students sensory systems in order for them to effectively learn. The balance boards, dome cones and stability balls will develop balance and flexibility skills. They will help the child that is the "shirt chewer", touches everything in sight and struggles with fine motor skills by understanding the sense of touch and how to interact and react to the world around us. The trampoline will help develop their cardiovascular skills and those children that kicks his or her feet to keep the brain alert and on task by teaching them information about body position and stability. I want to create a classroom environment with not only an emphasis on academic success, but social and emotional success as well. Students who lack body control also lack the ability to regulate emotions.
