Funded Dec 4, 2024Thru this project, I have incorporated my book collection as a resource for early finisher activities in my classroom. Once students complete their assignments and I have reviewed their work, they are welcome to visit the bookshelf and select any book of their choice. On a monthly thematic basis, I also showcase books throughout the classroom, highlighting diverse authors and characters from various backgrounds. I love seeing students engage with stories that expand their understanding of the world. Allowing them the freedom to choose what they read has been instrumental in improving their fluency and comprehension.
In my classroom, students are free to pick any book that interests them, without being restricted to their "reading level." I believe reading should be an enjoyable experience, and students should feel encouraged to explore any material they find appealing. They can read at their desks or find a quiet spot on the floor to immerse themselves in their chosen book. Additionally, there are days when I read aloud to the class, often sharing a chapter from a selected book at the end of the day or just a simple read aloud.
It's been so rewarding to see how excited some students are about new books! A few have fallen in love with a particular title, revisiting it repeatedly, while others have ventured into unfamiliar stories they hadn't encountered before.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Olmos
