Picture it. A small group of students and lots of joy and excitement around learning to read! This year I will be moving into a newly-created reading specialist position, working in small groups with students in K-2 who need extra support in reading. As a result of this being a new position (for both myself and my school), we need materials to use during our intervention groups to support our students' learning. I am excited to have the opportunity to build an intervention program that not only supports students in their language and literacy development but also shows them that reading is fun! For many struggling readers, seeing reading as joyful will be a change, as they likely equate reading with frustration or anxiety. These resources would be used during my small groups with students. I would incorporate them into each lesson to have students practice the new skills they are learning (e.g., naming letters, producing sounds, blending words together to read, building words, sight words, etc.) and review previously taught skills in a hands-on manner. Additionally, many of the products listed have a visual component. I carefully selected these to support the vocabulary development of English language learners. Not only will these resources help students as they are learning to read, they will also help to expand their vocabularies.
