Sit Still! Stop moving! Keep your body still! Stop fidgeting! My students will never hear me say these words in my classroom. I find it difficult to sit still for even a short period, therefore I do not expect my 7 and 8-year-old students to do so. Some children at this age are perfectly fine sitting still and can focus and learn, while others are not so fortunate. The students who fidget seem to have a more difficult time retaining information, they also tend to be more disruptive to their peers. When children are given choices to identify what works best to help them learn, it helps build confidence, gives them a chance to take ownership of their learning, and creates a safe classroom community. I believe all children can thrive and be engaged in classrooms that are comfortable, stimulating, and suitable to their unique abilities. This is why I am requesting flexible seating items such as wobble chairs. Alternative seating options will help improve my students' abilities to focus on their classwork and help stimulate their thinking, as they will be more comfortable. With flexible seating, my students will have the opportunity to take ownership of their learning by choosing what best fits their unique learning styles. This will result in increased positive classroom engagement and class productivity because students will be able to focus better.
