The classroom environment is the first step in creating a successful school year. For the past two years, my co-teacher and I have tried to integrate flexible seating into our classroom. Flexible seating is the idea where students choose a "non-traditional" learning spot that is comfortable and where they will be most successful. There is a plethora of research to support the benefits of flexible seating and will help my 20 students this year and future students for years to come. Students should have a choice in where they will best learn. Their choice in seating provides them with the movement, collaboration, comfort, and sensory input that is individual to each child. Wobble seats and scoop chairs help those students who need a little wiggle while they work. A variety of high and low tables provide choices for learning. Bean bags provide comfort when settling in with a great book and simultaneously building those integral independent reading skills. Students learn best when they are comfortable and that comfort looks different for every student. A variety of choices ensures that each student will be able to find a successful spot, but also provides them the opportunity to change their spot if they see it is not working. Providing more choices for seating leads to more productive, successful students.
