My students come from a lower socioeconomic background, as do I. Working in East L.A, a place a grew up in, you see kids work through so many obstacles. Having a language barrier and a learning disability, obstacles become far greater to overcome. Having to have worked through 4 years in high school fighting those obstacles and not having proper recognition is heart breaking. Many of my Seniors, I have had the pleasure of knowing since the 9th grade. Many were a big challenge as they had behavior problems. With work, guidance, and love the special ed teachers, me included, never gave up. Having had these group of kids and working with them closely, we have seen the growth and maturity. These “kids” are no longer kids but young, productive young individuals. Before the Pandemic, we (Special Day Class Teachers) that worked with them had an idea to do an award/banquet ceremony. With the Pandemic, all this came to a halt. Now we propose to send them off with a graduation caravan to every SDC (special Day Class) student from 4 of their SDC teachers. With this caravan we hope to send them off with a “Masson Jar Survival Kit for Life”. How better to help a community of great kids who deserve a moment of happiness though these tough times. Your donation would mean a great deal to the students and teachers of this caravan.
