We move beyond paper and pencil tasks to support our thinking with drawings, graphic organizers, and by creating foladbles. In addition to reading books, articles, and poems, our students are responsible for creating a variety of items to demonstrate their understanding of the Common Core curriculum. We need binders, sheet protectors, a pencil sharpener, dry erase markers, pens, pencils, chart paper and more as we work through books, to create and revise written works, and create projects in English Language Arts.
By making learning more interactive, it helps keep our population engaged. Middle school is difficult because of the intensity of the curriculum, the fast pace in which we move, and the gap in prior knowledge for the students. Different activities are used to help students connect and engage with the novels and demonstrate their learning.
For example in Unit 1, students create poetry about their American Dream that is laminated and posted in for everyone to see. In another unit where were learn figurative language, students use Post it Note Pad (easel size) to create anchor charts on their selected items. The students also write research papers that are archived and placed with sheet protectors in their writing portfolio (binders). Before publishing any written work, the students participate in a peer review process with colored pens, in which they evaluate and critique each other’s work.
All of these supplies will be used to ensure that students have access to the curriculum via a variety of activities that are designed to get them out of their seats and learning!
