The use of technology is constantly changing the way we interact with the world around us. We are presently educating students for jobs that don’t even exist. Along with having students engage in 21st century skills such as creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration, we need to also provide students with the opportunity to engage in computational thinking. Computational thinking is the way that computer scientists solve problems. It encompasses the ability to breakdown a problem, abstract the information, identify patterns, create an algorithm and test it. The future will require that students develop this way of thinking which will allow students to engage in any field they chose and have a way to think through a problem. The future needs problem solvers and innovative designers! A way to encourage students to unleash their creativity and engage in computational thinking is to provide them opportunities to code using robotics. Students develop learner agency and can set their own personal learning goals! There is just one problem. In order to do this, my students need Kindle Fire tablets. Providing my students with the ability to code using robotics will allow them to unleash their creativity, practice computational thinking, collaborate and share their knowledge with others. My students will be college and career ready as they become future problem solvers and innovative designers.
