The drums will be used with adolescent special education students of various cognitive and emotional functioning, as an alternative therapeutic mental health technique. The drums will provide the students with a creative outlet and a therapeutic mental heath alternative. The drums will be used in one on one settings with some individual students, in small groups of one or two and in a drum circle. The drums will provide my students with an alternative means to learn and practice; self- regulation techniques, cooperative behaviors, interpersonal skills, focusing strategies, group social skills, as well as, an expressive outlet for feelings and emotions, past and present.
The drums will provide my students with a chance to put down the cell phones, to explore the joy of belonging to a group, the satisfaction of participating in a creative, expressive activity with others and to be able to focus on a learning experience, where the process is more important than the finished product. The use of the drums in the drum circle, as well as individually, will provide an opportunity for my students to work cooperatively to create music. The drums will provide a physical means to express themselves with sound, using naturally made instruments.
The drums will be regarded as high interest tools by my students. Just as men and women during early times found comfort in the heart beat like rhythms of various drums beats, the drums will draw the students in a similar way. Drums have been used throughout history to express feelings of anger, sadness and joy, and my students will be encouraged to explore beats on the drums to express their emotions. The drums will create a sense of belonging, a group working on a common task, a community.
