High Level Learners Need Book Choices
Funded Mar 12, 2012I cannot begin to adequately express the gratitude that my colleagues and my students have experienced as a result of your generosity. The number of students that I saw express interest in reading this year seems exponential compared to that of my prior years, and any educator can tell you how thrilling it is for just one child to express enthusiasm about reading, much less many. I also had positive reports from several colleagues' classrooms: their students were engaged and interested in what they were reading. Some of the students reading Fast Food Nation even vowed to rethink and modify their dietary decisions!
Through your generous donations, not only were my students been able to foster a new interest in learning and to discover areas of enjoyment with reading that they previously had left unexplored, but they were also able to grow their collaboration skills because of their work in literature circles. The students' enthusiasm reflected out into the classroom and resulted in a more positive classroom environment that led to, ultimately, renewed energy around reading and literacy. At the end of the year, several of my students wished the school year were longer so they could read more of their groups' chosen books and more books in general!
Once again, thank you for your generosity, and happy reading to you all!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jones
Motivated Middle Schoolers Need Larger Library
Funded Oct 12, 2010This letter is a small way of saying a tremendous thank you for the books you provided for my classroom library. The students have checked out numerous titles and are using them not only to build their personal passion for reading but also to complete independent reading project assignments for my class.
The Harry Potter series and Diary of a Wimpy Kid books have particularly benefited my sixth graders--as soon as one book is returned, another student rushes to check it out. The eighth grade students are enjoying some of the more adventurous titles--I have one student who has become fascinated by Nicholas Flamel. Yet another student, while intimidated by some of the language in Mexican Whiteboy, has enjoyed exploring issues of identity through his reading.
I have already spent a large sum of money on my classroom and my school does not provide money to build one's classroom library, so without your donation, I would have been left with many books that are in less than optimal condition. For students who don't have access to the best condition books, it is wonderful to be able to provide them with beautiful, high-interest reading materials.
Without you, I would have much fewer avid readers.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jones
