After working with my students for a few months now, what I am noticing is that my students lack the connection between concrete to conceptual understanding of math. My hope is that the items in my cart help bridge the gap for my students so that math is no longer frustrating but is hands on, engaging, and enjoyable. Students start to initiate their own learning and connect dots that create momentous jumps in learning. With a constructivist approach, students synthesize new understanding from prior learning and new information. The manipulatives and math materials I have in my cart are tools for students' success. Something like the place value flip chart allows students to create a number and assign each digit to it's place value, which is a skill 2nd graders continuously work on. Different activities like the ten frame sets, write and wipe boards, and the mat floor game allow students to work together and challenge each other. Tools like these draw them away from teacher-led learning and allows students to dive into math independently.
