If Beale Street Could Talk is a classic novel by James Baldwin. Our students will be reading this book to better understand characterization and how it can be shaped by shifting narrators. We are going to read this book first before going to see (as a class) the film version, premiering November 2018. We will compare and contrast the two: which medium is a better vehicle for characterization, the novel or the film? Students will write a persuasive essay. Our assignment will culminate in a class-wide debate and a final verdict. I will act as tiebreaker if necessary! I'm Team Novel.
