In order for students to see the importance of learning mathematics, they must understand how mathematics is useful in their daily lives. My students come from many different cultural backgrounds and the story and word problems that they are accustomed to solving come from situations that they often do not personally relate with. This project will encourage my students to develop mathematical reasoning by creating real-world scenarios on how math concepts learned in class are culturally relevant to their diverse experiences. The laser printer and paper will allow my students to develop an anthology of their mathematical experiences that uniquely relate to their cultural background to share with other students. Students will not only develop a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics but also embrace diversity and develop writing acuity.
