Books by BIPOC for BIPOC
Funded May 6, 2021Thank you so much for helping our students read books by BIPOC! As a school with over 90% of our students being BIPOC, it is great if they can read books by authors who identify as BIPOC. We have already had some great discussions about representation and language in books!”
With gratitude,

Funded Sep 19, 2018I wanted to extend many thanks for choosing our project to fund. It really has made a big difference, in a few areas that my students needed. It probably sounds silly, but even for high school students, to see packages come to their teacher's classroom and having them help me open the boxes, they were just so confused. "You bought all of this stuff Mrs. Siddiqui? ... What do you mean they bought all of this for us?" I think it just bridged the importance of community and school, how my students in particular were just surprised that a local business wanted to help us out. It was fun too, because when I explained it was a car dealership, the students were even more confused about why, and I just said that someone at Wasler Hyundai in Brooklyn Park cared and found us, and decided to help.
As a teaching tool, I've been able to leverage organization skills, because so many of my students in particular need tools to organize their school work, but don't have the resources to buy the tools. I've been able to give out folders to so many of my students, and this eliminates lost work, and helps them keep their classes organized. Every year, it feels like folders is the most common thing I get asked for, besides writing utensils. Thank you for helping students be organized! It also has helped us with keeping our academic work organized, because I've asked students to use highlighters to highlight certain content, and before we would have to use markers. This sounds silly, but it matters that my students get to use the correct tools to do their work. Thank you.
My students and I really have enjoyed using the white boards. It is a fun tool for students to display their knowledge, to do informal check-ins about the content and also to just force them to make a decision. We had a class discussion on whether or not we should increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25/hr to $12/hr and it was just nice to have students write on a board to be able to display their opinion, and then see students change their opinions, wipe off the wage and rewrite a new number. My students have really enjoyed using these tools.
I am so sorry this took me so long to get completed. I had pictures and thank you cards completed in November, and then my family was struck with some unexpected family emergencies that have been intense, that included moving my father from Oregon to Minnesota, cleaning out his home and finding him the care he needs. I have thought about Walser Hyundai almost everyday at school, as we use the supplies on an almost daily basis, but I just haven't had the time. I apologize. It has meant so much to all of us at Edison, and I teach the vast majority of Seniors at Edison, so the supplies has a lot of reach. Thank you again!”
With gratitude,
