The majority of my students come from low-income households so there is little money for extras. Due to the underfunded nature of the fine arts and it requires quite a bit of resourcefulness to come up with a years worth of art supplies for 360 students. Through fundraising we can cover the basics, but it is difficult to secure funding for significant purchases. We need a functioning printmaking press for future printmaking artwork. This printing press is a versatile tool and an investment that would be used in the West Chatham art room for many years to come. Printmaking is a classical art making technique that my students adore. The process allows the creations of multiples of the same image and lends itself to explorations in color and design. Students will first be exposed to linoleum cut prints, a technique used by the publishers of the world's first books and the artists of Japanese prints. The use of an actual printing press vs. hand printing their work elevates their art from the "elementary' level and adds another level of complexity to the craftsmanship involved in the project. In these fast paced times our kiddos live in, printmaking allows them to slow down and really enjoy the creative process.
