These books will allow students to talk about texts that affirm who they are: people who matter. Our school has the second oldest library collection in the school district filled with books of people that don't look like them. Our students matter. When you fill classrooms with books of Black, indigenous, athletic, Latinx, gay, gender-fluid texts, you remind students that their work matters. These books will allows students to make sense of their identity while engaging in high-level conversations about books. Book clubs are unique because they are a student-run place where every student comes to the table with an different perspective. All of these books have been chosen with our middle school students in mind. They are diverse and beautiful and full of promise. They deserve the right to share their beauty with the world. With these new books, our students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read with friends at the own grade level. We know that the way to increase reading ability is reading volume, and reading with friends is a powerful motivator. This project will make students strong conversationalists who can handle hard topics and create better readers at the same time
