My students, with the new books purchased with my school’s Title 1 funds, will be able to sit and read in comfort. What’s more enticing than having a cozy place to dive into a new book??!!
I have been teaching special education students for 30 years and have come to realize that giving them a place where they can feel ‘at home’ only enhances their desire to succeed. I’ve recently changed my approach to getting my kids to read (we all know the more you read, the better the reader). I’ve found that if I stop everything and read, they don’t see it as a ‘you do, but I don’t’ CHORE. They see my excitement and enthusiasm when I pick up a book. They listen with awe as I share some of my readings. They write with great joy about their favorite character from their story. They realize, even if it takes all year, that opening that book and reading, REALLY READING, brings all sides of learning together. That reading is the key to academic success. So to have this book nook, that can only help increase their desire to read, I am certain to foster lifelong habits. Imagine these special-needs kids picking up a book rather than a gaming controller! That’s the potential this book nook may spark!
